The CANopen specifications developed by CiA members include the CANopen communication profile specification and several CANopen device and application profiles. The CANopen communication profile describes the CANopen object dictionary - the heart of each CANopen device - as well as the CANopen communication objects and the pre-defined master/slave connection set. The CANopen device and application profiles specify the standardized application objects and the default process data object (PDO) mapping. The CANopen Framework for programmable devices has to be regarded as framework for the definition of device profiles for intelligent or programmable devices in form of an extension to the CANopen communication profile. These additional mechanisms are useful for PLCs and CANopen service tools.
